Things That Affect How Long You Should Stay
Before we get into the nitty-gritty details like day-by-day plans, it’s helpful to think about the main things that will affect the length of your Cocos Islands travel itinerary.
Some, like flight schedules and activities, are more obvious. On the other hand, aspects like ferry days to Direction Island and wind conditions are not as easy to consider at first glance.
Flight schedules: As we explain in our guide to how to get to the Cocos Islands, flights between Perth and Cocos only depart twice per week, on Mondays or Fridays. This restricts when you can begin and end your Cocos Islands itinerary.
Ferry days (Direction Island): Ferries to Direction Island, a postcard-worthy palm-fringed island in the Cocos, only depart twice per week from West Island and Home Island. The ferry days are Thursday and Saturday, so if you don’t want to miss it, you’ll need to plan ahead.
Weather and wind: There’s one thing you can’t control on the Cocos, and that’s the weather. Even if you follow all of our advice on the best time to visit, poor weather can result in last-minute tour cancellations. On top of that, while strong winds may seem like Christmas came early for kitesurfers, they can cause rough sea conditions for snorkellers and divers.
Activities: Diving and kitesurfing activities rely heavily on good weather conditions and visibility. If you want to leave some wriggle room for bad weather or high swells, you may want to stay on the islands for a little longer.
Travelling with kids vs adults: If you’re visiting the Cocos Islands with kids, you’ll probably need to factor in extra downtime. Adults, on the other hand, usually have more consistent energy levels and can fit more activities into one day.
3-Day Cocos Itinerary (Short & Sweet)
Three days may seem like a short amount of time, but it’s surprising just how much you can fit into a three-day Cocos Keeling Islands itinerary.
This is the ideal trip length if you’re travelling on a tight schedule, visiting for the second time or celebrating a special occasion. It’ll also do wonders for the budget, especially if you take the time to browse our detailed costs and budget guide.
- Day 1: Fly from Perth to Cocos on a Friday. When you arrive at the Cocos Islands, check into your hotel on West Island and head to the visitor’s centre to hire snorkel gear and book tours. Dinner options include Salty’s fish and chips or traditional cuisine at Tropika. Celebrate your first night with drinks at the Cocos Club from 5 pm.
- Day 2: Take the Saturday ferry to Cossie’s Beach on Direction Island, armed with a picnic and snorkelling gear. If you’re a strong swimmer, you can tackle The Rip, a popular drift snorkel site.
- Day 3: Hire a car or bicycle to explore West Island in full. You may want to try calm snorkelling spots like Trannie’s Beach and Pulu Maraya (accessible from Scout Park at low tide), play golf or try a kitesurfing lesson at Kite Beach.
If you only spend three days at the Cocos, you’ll have to miss out on a few bucket-list Cocos activities, like a cooking class on Home Island, diving or island-hopping around the atolls. However, it’s still worthwhile taking a whirlwind visit.
5-Day Cocos Itinerary (Balanced First Visit)
If time and budget are at the top of mind as you plan how long to stay in the Cocos Keeling Islands, you may want to consider visiting for five days.
A Cocos Islands 5-day itinerary makes for a balanced first visit. There’s time to fit in plenty of activities, from diving and snorkelling to kitesurfing, while still leaving space for some proper rest and relaxation.
We particularly recommend five days for couples or small families who don’t want to commit to a whole week but also don’t want their itinerary to feel rushed.
- Day 1: Fly from Perth to Cocos on a Monday and check into your hotel on West Island. Go for a quick dip in the lagoon, and then head to Tropika for the local dinner buffet before grabbing happy hour drinks at the Cocos Club.
- Day 2: Spend the day scuba diving (Cocos Dive) or island-hopping around the atolls by motorised canoe (Cocosdays).
- Day 3: Rent a car or bicycle to explore top West Island spots like Trannie’s Beach and Pulu Maraya. Here, there’s always the option to take the ferry to Home Island for a day of cultural experiences; our Home Island guide will come in handy.
- Day 4: Take the Thursday ferry to Direction Island to spend the day at Cossie’s Beach and The Rip. Our Direction Island guide has everything you need to know to plan your trip.
- Day 5: Take some downtime on West Island before taking the return flight to Perth.
7-Day Cocos Itinerary (Ideal First-Timer Stay)
First-timers should always opt for a Cocos Islands 7-day itinerary if they have enough time.
Why? A full week at the Cocos gives you two shots at visiting Direction Island, and it also allows some wriggle room for rainy days, tired kids or rough sea conditions. You also have time to fit in multiple snorkelling, diving or kitesurfing activities.
The following Cocos travel itinerary should suit families, divers and slow travellers alike.
- Day 1: Fly to the Cocos on a Monday and settle in on West Island with a buffet dinner at Tropika and happy hour at Cocos Club.
- Day 2: Take a motorised canoe tour or boat around the eastern atolls to soak in the scenery and look out for green and hawksbill turtles.
- Day 3: Rent a car to visit snorkel spots on West Island, including Trannie’s Beach and Pulu Maraya.
- Day 4: Take the ferry to Direction Island for a day at Cossie’s Beach. Snorkel at The Rip if you’re a strong swimmer.
- Day 5: Sign up for some water-based activities, whether it’s scuba diving, a kitesurfing lesson or a snorkelling tour.
- Day 6: Take the ferry to Home Island to visit the Pulu Cocos Museum and Oceania House. Here, you can visit Turtle Beach or take part in cultural activities like cooking and basket weaving.
- Day 7: Finish your trip with a do-nothing day at the West Island lagoon. You deserve it.
10-Day Itinerary (Cocos + Christmas Island Combo)
Spending 10 days at the Cocos is a dream for many Australians. For the average person, this might be a little too long. However, if you’re keen to go wildlife or birdwatching or spend several days kitesurfing or diving, a 10-day Cocos Islands itinerary could be just right.
If you’re holidaying in the Indian Ocean for more than 10 days, we particularly recommend a Cocos Islands Christmas Island itinerary. However, this will need some careful planning around flight schedules.
How to Split the Days Between the Islands in 12 Days
Flights from Christmas Island to Cocos Islands (QF 361) depart every Monday at 2:45 pm.
Flights from Cocos Islands to Christmas Island (QF 363) depart every Friday at 3:10 pm.
Due to the flight schedule, the best approach is to plan a 12-day trip:
- Fly from Perth to Cocos on Monday.
- Spend 5 days at the Cocos Islands.
- Fly from Cocos to Christmas Island on Friday
- Spend 7 days on Christmas Island.
- Fly from Christmas Island to Perth on the following Monday.
Red crab migration timing
The red crab migration at Christmas Island typically begins in October or November. However, sometimes it can happen as late as December or January. The migration only lasts 1 – 2 weeks, so there’s only a short window.
Family-Friendly Cocos Itinerary
Deciding how long to stay in the Cocos Keeling Islands is a little trickier when you’re travelling as a family.
The best length of stay for families is 5 to 7 days. Pacing yourself is important, as kids need more downtime to recover from activities. They can also put a spanner in even the most carefully-made plans (think funny tummies, tantrums or misplaced snorkelling gear).
Calm snorkelling spots
- Trannies Beach, West Island, is a shallow beach protected by an outer reef.
- Pulu Maraya, West Island, is accessible across the reef from Scout Park (at low tide only). The island has a gentle drift and plenty of fish, clams and the occasional turtles.
Ferry considerations
For a smooth ferry trip with the kids, remember to bring enough cash to cover the ticket prices ($5 per person for a return ticket).
Walking to the ferry in the heat might not be much fun with kids, so instead, you can take the local bus service from the West Island settlement to Rumah Baru jetty.
The bus departs from Cocos Beach Motel around 30 minutes before the ferry departure (45 minutes for the late-morning ferry). You can check the ferry timetable in advance online.
Diving-Focused Itinerary
For your Cocos diving itinerary, aim to spend at least 3 to 7 days in the Cocos. The longer you stay, the better, because diving depends on swell conditions, visibility and weather. There’s only one diving company on the islands, Cocos Dive, so booking in advance is highly recommended.
It may be tempting to put aside every single day for dives. However, spacing your dive days is smart to reduce fatigue and reduce your risk of decompression sickness (DCS). Rest days also help you to be more present for your next dive.
The Cocos Islands have an average visibility of 25 metres, and diving is possible all year round. However, the dry season (May to November) brings better visibility overall because heavy rains often push mud or debris into the area and block visibility at surface level.
Cocos Island-Hopping & Adventure-Focused Itinerary
If you’re planning an action-packed adventure itinerary, make sure to include these activities on your Cocos Keeling Islands travel itinerary:
- Visit Direction Island and snorkel at The Rip, a strong drift snorkel.
- Take the ferry to Home Island to snorkel at Turtle Beach.
- Explore the lagoon by motorised canoe and check out the turtle grazing areas for green and hawksbill turtles.
- Sign up for a kitesurfing lesson at Kite Beach.
- Join a boat tour, where the local skipper will help you find remote spots around the atolls.
How Flight Days Affect Your Itinerary
Getting to the Cocos isn’t quite as easy as catching one of the daily flights from Sydney to Melbourne.
There are only two flights per week, on Monday or Friday, so it’ll affect your decision on how long to stay in the Cocos Keeling Islands.
Departing Flights
The Friday departure (QF 363) is a direct through-flight from Perth to Cocos. It departs at 9:25 am, arriving on the Cocos at 2:20 pm.
This leaves you with most of the afternoon to grab groceries and take a quick dip in the lagoon before firing up the barbecue or grabbing dinner.
The Monday departure (QF 363) is a connecting flight from Perth to Cocos via Christmas Island. It departs at the same time (9:25 am), except it arrives over one hour later at 3:50 pm. Therefore, you have less time to settle in.
Partial days matter more than you might think in the Cocos because the West Island supermarket shuts at 3:00 pm. Instead, you can pre-order a food box to pick up from Salty’s near the airport.
If you’re spending precious vacation days on the Cocos, you’ll probably want to avoid the feeling of “lost days”. Therefore, we recommend taking the Friday flight from Perth and being mindful of your return flight:
Return Flights
The Monday return flight to Perth departs at 4:40 pm, arriving at 10:40 pm
However, the Friday return flight to Perth connects via Christmas Island, so it departs earlier, at 3:10 pm. Its arrival time is the same, 10:40 pm, but you lose more of the day.
Is It Worth Staying Longer Than 7 Days?
We have one final question to answer for how long to stay in the Cocos Keeling Islands, and that’s whether it’s worth staying longer than seven days.
Stay longer than seven days if:
- You’re coming to the Cocos to dive or kitesurf. These activities depend on the weather and visibility.
- You’re splitting your trip between Cocos and Christmas Island.
Don’t stay longer than seven days if:
- You’re easily bored.
- You’re not interested in visiting Home Island.
- You’re travelling on a budget or a tight schedule.
Signs you’ll love a longer stay:
- You’re a slow traveller at heart. You don’t like to feel rushed when you’re exploring a new destination
- You’re travelling with kids and want to make room for the unexpected tantrums or nap time.
- You love experiencing culture. Staying longer than seven days gives you the chance to stay on both West Island, Home Island and Christmas Island if you want.
FAQs About Length of Stay
Is 5 days enough for snorkelling and relaxing?
Five days is enough time for snorkelling and relaxing at the Cocos Islands. You can easily take the ferry to Direction Island to snorkel at The Rip or head out to snorkel sites around the atolls on a snorkelling tour. There are snorkel sites around West Island, accessible by bicycle or car.
Will I run out of things to do?
It’s hard to run out of things to do at the Cocos Islands, with local tour operators running boat tours, wildlife tours, cultural experiences, diving, kitesurfing lessons and other activities. The Cocos also has museums, historic sites, beaches, a golf course and a handful of restaurants and bars. From West Island, you can take ferries to Home Island and Direction Island.
Is it better to stay longer or combine with Christmas Island?
If you’re staying at the Cocos for 12 days or longer, visiting Christmas Island is a good idea. However, if your trip is less than 5 – 7 days, you may find your schedule too tight to visit Christmas Island in addition to the Cocos.
How does weather affect stay length?
If you’re visiting the Cocos Islands, it’s always a good idea to leave extra time for unexpected bad weather. Poor weather can cause tours to be cancelled at the last minute.
